What to paint today?

Whenever I’m looking for something to paint, I sometimes get lost in it. There are so many things to be inspired by, that it is hard to find the one thing that is extra special.

I have this same problem when using the remote. 600 channels?! What if I miss something really great while I’m watching this documentary about the making of another documentary? But If I check all the channels, then it’s time for another show and I have to start all over.

Sometimes it’s best to not watch anything. But for a painting, it really is best to have reference. What’s hard to remember sometimes, though, is that the painting is much more than the subject. Really, almost anything close at hand can be turned into a great painting. Everyday objects have  enormous meaning for the viewer, so they are significant and relevant when showcased on canvas. The way you paint it, is also very important. You, the artist, are making decisions on placement, lighting, color, and technique. Each of these elements has an equal part to play along side the content.

So… just pick something. Paint it. Make it fabulous. If you get a “learner” or a “not-quite-a-masterpiece”, that’s ok. You learn a lot, which is necessary and of course you can apply what you’ve learned to the next painting.

You know, you can paint another one. And another one. You have the source for endless paintings. It’s you!
